US Southern Research Institute has achieved new breakthroughs in low-cost production of carbon fiber

The US Department of Energy has announced a $5.9 million (US$36.35 million) award to the Southern Research Institute in Alaska for its achievements in promoting high-performance, low-cost carbon fiber capacity.

The US Department of Energy's award is mainly used to fund a multi-step catalytic process that converts non-food biomass from sugar to acrylonitrile, which is the main raw material for the production of carbon fiber. At present, due to its light weight and high strength, the demand for carbon fiber in the fields of aviation, defense, automobile, aerospace, wind turbine production and sporting goods continues to grow. The Southern Institute's Durham project in North Carolina is exploring new ways to produce acrylonitrile and gas-based bio-based chemicals and fuels using renewable materials such as non-food biomass materials.

Michael, vice president of engineering at the Southern Research Institute, said, “Carbon fiber materials are good in strength and light in weight and can be used in place of steel and other heavy metals. The current production methods limit the application of carbon fiber, but with renewable materials, we may be able to Expand its range of applications to improve the performance of energy-efficient vehicles or the performance of renewable energy components such as fan blades."

Dr. Amit Goyal, senior chemical engineer at the Southern Institute, said, “We have developed an innovative process concept that uses biomass to extract sugar from various sources into acrylonitrile. This process is not only economic but also reduces Carbon footprint in carbon fiber production."

In addition, the company also participated in the research and development of Cytec, a major carbon fiber producer in the United States. Billy, head of the company's carbon fiber research and development department, said, "We are very pleased to be able to achieve this result in this research. This also shows that Cytec is a capable, valuable and trustworthy cooperation in the development of a new generation of carbon fiber technology. partner."

Carbon fiber is an inorganic polymer fiber having a carbon content of more than 90%. Carbon fiber composite wire made of carbon fiber is a new structure of energy-saving compatibilizing wire. Compared with conventional wire, it has light weight, high tensile strength, good heat resistance, small thermal expansion coefficient and small high temperature sag. It has a series of advantages such as high conductivity, low line loss, large current capacity, good corrosion resistance and easy ice coating. It can be widely used in old line and power station bus line capacity expansion and new line construction, and can be used for large span and large Special climate and geographical occasions such as drop, heavy ice, and high pollution.
